Episode 06: Noble Purposes, Defining Your Principles, and the Five Be’s of Leadership

February 16

In this episode of Duke’s Life of Significance series, host Sanyin Siang interviews Hubert Joly who reminds us to live a purpose-driven life—as individuals and as leaders. Hubert notes that it can be dangerous to think about yourself solely in terms of your work; figuring out your noble purpose and orienting your life around that purpose can correct the myth that we are only as valuable as our production output.

Key Takeaways

  1. Don’t let work become your identity. We often conflate identity and platform, but our identities will outlast our platforms. Finding your “noble purpose” will help you to distinguish between the two.

  2. Define your principles self-reflectively. Be clear about what these are so that you can articulate them to the organization.

  3. Don’t wait for perfection and grow stagnant. Get started, keep moving, and don’t worry about your rate of acceleration; just focus on progressing. This will create internal momentum and energy.

  4.  As a leader, be purposeful, be clear about your role, be servant-oriented, be values-based, and be authentic.

“Leadership starts from within. It’s a journey in trying to define who we are, who we want to be, and how we want to show up.”
— Hubert Joly
